Gold Standard Design Certification for Malawi Improved Cookstoves Project

Improved Cookstoves for Healthy Families - a project jointly developed by Futures Inc. and the Kansai Electric Power Company in the Republic of Malawi received the Gold Standard Design Certification in October, 2025.

The project will distribute approximately 70,000 fuel-efficient improved cookstoves (ICS) in Dowa District, the Republic of Malawi. The ICS will replace traditional three-stone fire and reduce firewood usage approximately by 50%.The project will generate approximately 750,000 tCO2e of carbon credits over 10 year crediting period. The IoTs will be installed on a subset of cookstoves large enough to provide statistically significant data for all stoves distributed to measure stove usage accurately for more transparency.

The project will also create additional SDGs benefits: improved health and well being with reduced toxic smoke and enhancing gender equality by reducing time for domestic work including cooking and collecting firewood.

This project marks an important milestone in our mission to address climate change and income inequality. Futures Inc. is committed to delivering benefits to communities that are positive, tangible and sustainable.
